Abstract
Childhood accidents in the home represent a significant public health problem in Spain, being one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in children under 14 years of age, especially in the early years of life.
Risk factors include not only the child’s age and developmental level, but also characteristics of the physical environment and the supervision provided by caregivers.
The PrevInfad group has updated its recommendations on the prevention of childhood injuries caused by home accidents. The article develops the reasoning on which these recommendations are based, starting from structured clinical questions, a literature search, selection of the most relevant studies, and assessment of the evidence. The conclusions are: a) It is suggested that counselling on the prevention of childhood home accidents be provided during primary care visits; b) The use of protective measures is suggested to reduce morbidity and mortality from childhood accidents; and c) The use of baby walkers is not recommended.
